On Aug. 11, US General Merrick Garland granted Delaware US Attorney David Weiss — the point person in the Hunter Biden case — special counsel authority. As a result, Weiss now has added legal firepower for his investigation. Complimenting that inquiry are efforts by congressional Republicans, led by Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) to take a deep dive into the Biden family’s overseas activity and potential influence peddling.

The deal was coupled with a pretrial diversion agreement on a felony gun charge for illegal possession of a firearm while addicted to illicit drugs. US District Judge Maryellen Noreika, a Trump appointee who oversaw the hearing, raised constitutional questions about the agreement and found daylight between the prosecution and the defense.
